Congress leader and son of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Anil Kumar Shastri unveils the statue of his father in Warangal

Warangal: The slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ given by the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri, has been gaining strength and significance day by day in the country, said senior Congress leader Anil Kumar Shastri.

The slogan, which took birth during 1965 India-Pakistan war following the threat by the then American president to stop export of wheat to India if the war was not stopped, has made entire nation stood united, he said.

After the threat from the US, Lal Bahadur Shastri held talks with agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan. It was deduced that if the 40-crore population in the country goes without food for a day in a week, the problem could be overcome.

The citizens in the country responded positively to the call by the PM at that time, said Anil Kumar Shastri, the son of the late premier and special invitee to Congress Working Committee. He was here to unveil his father’s statue installed on the premises of Lal Bahadur College in Warangal on Thursday.

The ideals and principles followed by the late Prime Minister were above political, castes and religious affiliations. He was instrumental in changing the British laws implemented in the country by setting up a committee to suggest administrative reforms, the Congress leader noted. ‘That is why Lal Bahadur Shastri is being respected across the nation as a great leader,’ he added.

Anil Shastri thanked the college management for installing his father’s statue, which he said was the best one he had seen in the country so far. ‘Installing the statue at the college and inviting me to unveil it will be a memorable event for me and my family members’.

The programme was chaired by the College Chairman G Bhagyanarayana. TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy, MLA D Vinay Bhasker, the College Vice-Chairman B Ramadhar Reddy, Principal K Satya Parameshwar, city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari and others were present.

The statue of LB Shastri was installed with the financial assistance of retired faculty, alumni, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.
