Manuguru: Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said that the State government has decided to construct dams up to Maharashtra on River Godavari with the sole motive of providing sufficient irrigation waters.

Addressing a public meeting after inaugurating Rs 11.35 crore-lift irrigation scheme at Pamulapalli in Aswapuram mandal, Tummala stated that if the proposed dams were completed, they would facilitate easy business transactions at lesser cost.

Referring to the Pamulapalli scheme, he said the contractor would take up the responsibility of overseeing the scheme for two years. During that period, the farmers should get acquainted with its operation.

The farmers should immediately take up repair works without waiting for others to do the job so as to ensure that there were no operational problems in the scheme.

They should set up a fund for its proper operation. Tummala stated that the Pamulapalli scheme was a boon for the people of two districts, as it would meet their drinking and irrigation needs.

The Minister, meanwhile, lamented that lack of attention by leaders in the past had led to improper functioning of 381 lift irrigation projects in the district.

Tummala disclosed that lift irrigation schemes costing Rs 100 crore were being taken up to provide irrigation to those lands in Pinapaka constituency which would not get water from Sitarama project.

These schemes include Mothe (costing Rs 10 crore and covering 1,135 acres), Singareddipally (Rs 19 crore covering 2,000 acres) and Allapalli (Rs 10 crore covering 1,050 acres).

Eight lift schemes were being taken up in the Pinapaka constituency to provide irrigation cover to every acre, Tummala informed.

Pinapaka MLA Payam Venkateswarlu chaired the meeting which was attended by MP Sitaram Naik, TRICOR Chairman Thati Venkateswarlu, District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu, IDC Executive Engineer Vidyasagar, RDO Sivanarayan Reddy, Irrigation department EE Venkateshwar Reddy and others.
