Kothagudem: With the State Election Commission (SEC) deciding to hold the Gram Panchayat polls before their scheduled date of August next year, there is a ray of hope among the aspirants who have been keenly awaiting the polls. The five-year term of the sarpanches after they were elected in the combined state in July 2013 is to end on August 1, 2018.
This is the first time that Gram Panchayat elections to 205 Panchayats in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district would be held after districts reorganization. They can be viewed as referendum to the TRS government as the general elections slated for 2019.
The SEC is understood to have decided to hold the elections in May 2018, as the school examinations would get over by March. It has suggested the government to complete all necessary works such as voters’ list, reservations, setting up of polling stations etc by April 17.
The SEC has directed the Panchayati Raj department to complete the reorganistion of the gram panchayats and wards by the end of this year.
It suggested that the administrative set-up along with the polling material and transport arrangements should be ready. It wanted the department to prepare the budget estimates and release the required funds.
