Khammam: The officials of Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC) are having a tough time in finding an alternative dumped yard as the Dhanavaigudem dumping yard is inviting everyone’s ire, especially people who reside close to the area.

Mounds of debris is found dumped in 35 acres of land at Dhanvaigudem area. The Municipal Corporation had converted the area into a dumping yard over a period of time without any proper planning, where around more than 10,000 people reside in the surrounding colonies.

Unable to bear the stench and smoke from the dumping yard, people residing in Ramannapet, Raparthinagar, TNGO’s Colony, BC Colony, Mammillagudem, Three Town and Mayuri centre areas even took up protests seeking officials’ intervention. T-Mass district leader Y Vikram alleged that mindless dumping of garbage has wreaked havoc on local environment, besides turning into breeding grounds for mosquitoes and houseflies.

The garbage dumping has further contaminated drinking water, air and food in surrounding areas of Dhanvaigudem. “People around Dhanvaigudem dumping yard are suffering a lot due noxious gases and stench from the garbage. Further, the burning of garbage aggravating the situation,” he added. Earlier, the residents of TNGO’s Colony staged a dharna alleging that the Municipal officials did not take any measures to solve the problem as burning of garbage continued for days.

Honourable president of TNGO's Mohan said dumping of garbage in a residential area was gross violation of norms spelt out by the Supreme Court. “The stench is unbearable and there is plethora of ailments. Children are suffering from respiratory problems due to smoke and gases emitted from the garbage,” he said, threatening to launch an agitation if the KMC continued its nonchalance towards the issue.

City Mayor Dr Papa Lal along with the Municipal Commissioner, after observing the dumping yard, had taken decision for shifting the dumping yard to Mallemadugu. However, the people living in surrounding areas along with the nearby villages are also up in the arms with the officials and are against the proposal.
