Mahbubnagar: The Department of Health and Medical in Mahbubnagar district has decided to introduce biometric attendance system to check rampant absenteeism. The top officials of the department had, in fact, proposed introduction of system long back. But it had been put on back-burner due to protest by doctors, nurses and hospital staff.

“Though we had decided to introduce the biometric attendance system last year, but our attempts were blocked by the healthcare staff. We gave them a chance to mend their ways and asked them to attend their duties regularly without any absenteeism, but they had not changed. Therefore, we have no choice but to go in for biometric to ensure 100 per cent attendance by the health department staff,” said Rajani, District Medical and Health Officer, Mahbubnagar

Unlike earlier, at present, the government hospitals are facing huge rush from the common public to get free healthcare services. However, with no staff present on time in the hospitals, there are complaints from the public against the increased absenteeism by the doctors, nurses and other attending staff at all levels in the district.

In view of this, the Health Department authorities are now gearing up to install biometric attendance monitoring equipment at all the hospitals, including primary healthcare centres and district hospital. The move is seen as best weapon to tackle the absenteeism problem among the doctors and paramedical staff and tame in late comers so that the service delivery mechanism can be improved.

Even though the officials attempted to install biometric system, but it was shelved due to opposition from doctors and paramedical staff. However, they have now decided to implement it as the doctors and the paramedical staff did not mend their ways and continue to show negligence in discharging their duties.

According to healthcare authorities, initially the installation of the biometric machines would begin from the PHCs. Later, it would be extended to urban health care centres, community health centres, area hospitals and district hospital in a phased manner.

The officials have already purchased the equipment for the purpose and are now in the process of installing the required software. The officials said in the first phase as many as 38 biometric attendance systems would be installed. The cost of each equipment is said to be more than Rs 12,000. The officials are utilising the funds sanctioned to the hospital development committees for purchasing the equipments.
