Khammam: Several parts of the district, after reeling under an extended dry spell, received moderate to widespread rains in the last 24 hours. The farmers who were worried over the monsoon playing truant were happy with rainy season reviving.

The Thiurmalayapalem and Sattupalli mandals recorded 60 mm rainfall, Khammam urban and rural mandal, besides Enkoor, Vemsoor, Wyra, Bonakal and Thallada mandal received over 50 mm rainfall.

With the Met office predicting more rain in the next 48 hours, the farmers in several parts of the district have begun sowing operations of cotton, chilli, pulses and other crops. Transplantation of paddy nurseries too began.

“The rains for the past two days is a saving grace. After a lul, the monsoon revived,” said the Thatikonda Buchhaiah, a farmer. The Agricultural Department said said the rains during the last two days have brought smiles back on the farmers’ face.

The rains would help the speed up sowing operations. With the Mission Kakatiya helping revive the tanks, the farmers can expect a good yield this season too.

The targeted area for kharif crops in the district is 2.04 lakh hectares. Of which cotton is expected to be sown in t 1.12 lakh hectares and paddy in 67,000 hectares, besides other crops in remaining area, the officials added.
