Kaleshwaram gets another green thumbs-up

Hyderabad: In yet another major achievement by the State government, the Centre accorded the final Stage - 2 Forest clearance to the Kaleshwaram project. With the clearance from the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment, the project has now overcome all major hurdles. Taking cue from the speedy clearances, the Telangana government hastened official process to seek the second phase of environmental clearance for the project.
In the last two weeks, the State government succeeded in getting Hydrology, Central Ground Water Authority, Construction Machinery Consultancy and Inter-state clearances for the project. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said the government fulfilled all the norms set by the Union Ministry in getting the second phase forest clearances in the acquirement of 8,181 acres of forest land to be used for the construction of the project.
The State government already deposited Rs 723 crore with the Union Ministry to take up compensatory afforestation over the non-forest lands, he said the acquired forest lands would be used for the construction of tunnels, house pumps, surge pools, reservoirs and delivery cisterns under the Kaleshwaram project.
The inter-state project has been taken up with the cooperation of Maharashtra government aiming to create 18 .25 lakh acres of new ayacuts and stabilise another 18.82 lakh acres in Telangana. The government targeted to complete the project by 2018 end.
Irrigation officials said the EPTRI (Environment Protection Training and Research Institute) has been giving finishing touches to the report prepared to get stage - 2 environmental clearances for the project. The institute conducted study on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) on Kaleswaram project comprising barrages at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla. The submergence of the areas near the proposed reservoirs - Mallannasagar, Baswapuram, Kondapochamma, Gaandimalla, Anantagiri and Mambad reservoirs was also studied.
Officials said the EPTRI report would be submitted to the Union Ministry by December first week. It is expected that Kaleshwaram project would get all required clearances by January next.
