Tibet, China: About 6,000 people were evacuated from Tibet in China after a landslide blocked a river creating a lake, said China’s emergency services on Thursday. The situation is a threat to downstream areas in India.

A cliff collapsed in the valley through which the Yarlung Tsagpo river (called Siang when it enters Arunachal Pradesh from Tibet and Brahmaputra once it enters Assam) forming a dam-like barrier, as per China’s disaster management agencies quoted by a Chinese state media report.

The landslide occurred near a village in the Menling county and the water in the lake rose by 130 metres, said reports. No deaths or injuries were reported yet, said disaster management who have been touch with India the authorities in India and keeping them apprised of the situation.

The district magistrate Tamiyo Tatak said one the blockade is cleared, water flow towards might increase drastically causing a flood-like situation. The situation is reminiscent of June 2000 when a sudden release of water caused damage in Arunachal Pradesh and other downstream areas.

Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang authorities issued a warning asking people not to go near Siang River for fishing, swimming or collecting driftwood. Water level in Siang has receded by two metres after the landslide.

“We got a report from the Central Water Commission (CWC) about the landslide in Tibet. The water level in Siang river has gone down by around 2 metres at Tuting in Arunachal Pradesh,” Duly Kamduk, deputy commissioner of Upper Siang district told HT.

The authorities have alerted the people not to venture in low-lying areas near Siang such as Jarku, Paglek, SS Mission, Jarkong, Banskota, Berung, Jampani, Sigar, Ralling, Borguli, Seram, Kongkul, Namsing, Mer, and Gadum.
