On May 20, the Dhanauri Kalan village in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district became the sixth village in the country to benefit from the Ministry of Electronics and IT’s DigiGaon initiative. Minister of Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, inaugurated a WiFi choupal in the village, which will offer access to internet for as low as Rs 5. 

On May 20, the Dhanauri Kalan village in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district became the sixth village in the country to benefit from the Ministry of Electronics and IT’s DigiGaon initiative. Minister of Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, inaugurated a WiFi choupal in the village, which will offer access to internet for as low as Rs 5.

Under this Digital Village scheme, govt. will provide affordable access to education, skill development and healthcare in villages. Village based Common Service Centers (CSCs) will manage Wi-Fi Choupals and will provide easy access to digital infrastructure and Internet. The Central government is also planning to launch this facility in 700 villages across the country till December 2018.

The total number of Common Service Centres (CSCs) which provides basic electronic services will be extended to cover around 2.5 lakh villages. Union govt. is also planning to launch a Subsidy Scheme for villages under Digital India Initiative. Union Minister has inaugurated the WI-Fi Choupal in Jewar on 20 May 2018. Wi-Fi Choupals connect all the villages with Wi-Fi network along with assistance to setup business units.

DigiGaon Project is a multipurpose initiative of the central govt. for the development of villages and to make them self-sustainable. The Centre has already set up sanitary napkin manufacturing facilities in 110 villages and will expand it to 6,000 villages till December 2018. Digigaon Scheme creates a source of livelihood for poor people and also promotes awareness about menstrual hygiene. The important features of this scheme are as follows:-

Common Service Centers (CSCs) are the strategic cornerstone of the Digital India Initiative. CSCs serve as the access points to deliver digital services and helps people to enrol through IGNOU and NIOS distance learning programmes. Till date, there are 2.91 lakh CSCs operational in the country.

Digi Gaon Scheme promotes rural Entrepreneurship, capacity building and livelihood through community participation. All the Digital Villages are equipped with solar lighting facility in community centers, energy efficient LED assembly units, sanitary napkin units with participation of Asha and Anganwadi workers.

All the Digi Gaon will possess regular CSC services like Aadhaar, Banking, Telemedicine, Education and Financial services. Citizens can also get works like income certificate, domicile certificate, pension scheme, mobile recharge etc. at their doorstep.
