Low literacy levels plague Nizamabad

Nizamabad: The problem of illiteracy has been plaguing many villages, especially those situated in the interior areas in the Nizamabad district. Although the Central and the State governments have formulated several policies with regard to education, they are not being implemented properly at the field level due to the indifference of the officials concerned. The literacy level stands at 64.11 per cent in the district.
An example in this regard is the Sakshara Bharat programme, which was started with great fanfare on September 8, 2010 but failed to implement it effectively. Moreover, September 8 was also declared as the World Literacy Day but nothing was done to wipe out illiteracy completely.
To implement the Sakshara Bharat programme effectively, coordinators were appointed in the villages and in order to supervise them, a mandal supervisor, Project Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Project Director were appointed. However, there has been no improvement in literacy levels
According to official figures, Nizamabad has a literacy level of 85.88 per cent but the ground reality tells a different story with high levels of illiteracy. Furthermore, the literacy level among women is much lower when compared to men and it failed to cross the 50 per cent mark in the 23 mandals of the district.
Women have crossed the 50 per cent mark only in 13 mandals. In spite of the fact that teachers were appointed to educate the women coming to the Saksha Bharat centres, the situation has not improved.
When compared to the year 2015, the level of literacy is very low in Nizamabad this year. What is worrying is the fact that the Kamareddy district, which was carved out of Nizamabad district is placed last in terms of literacy. It has only 40 per cent literacy. Large number of illiterates can be found in Kamareddy.
Excepting in Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Armoor, Banswada, Bodhan, Bhimgal, Balkonda, Edapalli, Dichpalli, Jakranpalli, Madnoor, Kotagiri and Renjal mandals, literacy level was not more than 50 per cent in the remaining mandals. For instance, in Lingampet mandal, the literacy level is only 37.11 per cent.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Monday, several locals expressed the hope that the State and Central governments take effective steps to enhance the literacy levels in the Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.
