Yellareddy (Nizamabad): Residents of this division are facing problems in securing drinking water as local gram panchayat staff has allegedly failed to spend the amount allotted by the State government to tide over the problem of water not getting filtered and the residents having to make to do with consuming contaminated water.

A filter bed was put up in the division at a cost of Rs.40 lakh with the objective of providing drinking water to about 30,000 residents. But it failed to deliver results as the department staff allegedly did not change sand in it, leading to non-filtering of water.

After local people like Mujeeb Ahmed, B Patel and Ramulu expressed their anguish, the government, keeping their stand in view, sanctioned Rs.9.8 lakh last year for the purpose. But to the shock of the residents, the gram panchayat staff failed to utilise the amount if charges made by the people are to be believed.

The then Sarpanch Devender, just to utilise the amount, removed the sand from the filter bed and washed off his hands, as against taking up work of filling 100 tractor loads of sand and ‘kankar’ stones for filtering water, to be supplied to the people through pipes.

Following allegations of abuse of the sanctioned funds, Devender was suspended. Upa-sarpanch Pappu Venkatesham was appointed in-charge in his place. To fulfill the objective of providing drinking water to the residents, outer tanks, each with a capacity of 60,000 litres, have been constructed. Water is being supplied to villagers through pipes. Yet for other purposes they are purchasing mineral water spending Rs.10 per litre.

At least 2,000 mineral water bottles are being used by them daily. Those supplying mineral water are happy with the large number of customers.

However, when local residents pleaded with the gram panchayat secretary and the in-charge sarpanch with regard to the filter, they got an assurance that the sand would be removed shortly. When the residents approached assistant engineer of the Rural Water Supply Praveen Reddy, they were assured that Rs.9.8 lakh was ready for changing the sand in the filter bed. The AE stated that this work would be completed shortly after holding discussions with GP secretary Sailu.
