Nizamabad MGNREGS workers suffer under heat wave
With the onset of the hot summer season, the workers of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) are facing immense hardships in carrying on with their work. There are no basic amenities at their work place.

Unable to withstand the heat under the blazing Sun, some of them are fainting. Besides, tents and shamianas have not been set-up at their workplace. As water scarcity is rampant at their work place, some labourers are forced to bring from their homes.
There are as many as 2.5 lakh people were given jobs under the MGNREGS scheme in Nizamabad district. As the temperatures keep soaring with each passing day, the workers are forced to stop working and running under the shade of trees for shelter.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, a woman worker Mallavva lamented that they were not given proper tools or equipment to carry on with their work and is forced to bring her own equipment from home. At least, last year, they gave a few tools, but this year, they stopped giving even that.
Another worker Ramulu said that many of them were forced to purchase the tools spending from their own pockets as the government failed to provide them.
The labourers were not even given first- aid or tablets when they fainted at their workplace due to the severe heat wave. Gangamani said that their demand to increase the number of working days were ignored as they were not even paid properly for the work that they put in for the last 90 days.
Pouring out his woes, Narasaiah said that drinking water facility was not provided at the workplace and most of them were suffering from dehydration. They had to carry water in jugs from their homes, he bemoaned.
Tents were not arranged for them to take rest for some time when they got tired, he lamented. He said that they may in for more trouble in the coming months of April and May when temperatures reach the zenith and they would be totally exhausted.
He demanded 200 days of work every year and the daily wages to Rs 200 per day. However, when contacted, the officials concerned said that they were making arrangements.
However, speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, District Water Management Agency (DWMA) Project Director M Venkateshwarlu said that steps were being taken to provide all the necessary facilities for the workers during this summer.
Though he agreed that there was a delay in the payment of wages, he said it was those who did not have savings bank accounts. He said that drinking water facility would be provided at the workplace and tents would be arranged for them to take rest. Besides, the equipment would be provided, he added.
