Tirupati: A kalasam (pitcher-like structure) fell down from atop the Bhikshala Gopuram on Thursday in Srikalahasthi temple. Observers said the temple engineering staff did not take any measures to avoid damage to structure, which had become vulnerable.
Shrine engineers confirmed that plants had started jutting out of the joints of the gopuram. They said repairs would be taken up immediately. A priest of the temple said that the Gopuram was constructed 600 years ago with contributions from beggars and hence it was named ‘Bhikshagalla Gopuram’.
One of the eight kalasams of Vinayaka Swamy temple in the complex fell down three years ago. The priests then said it was a precursor to a major collapse. Later, the Maha Gopuram came down. Local people and devotees alleged that the temple authorities had neglected the ancient shrine, though they left no stone unturned to increase collection of revenues.
