In a rare first for him, which, nonetheless, endorses his growing reputation as the next big thing in the sport, budding paddler S Fidel R Snehit, a product of the Hyderabad-based Global Table Tennis Academy (GTTA), has got pride of place in three categories in the Dr Bodepudi Srikant Memorial State Ranking Table Tennis tournament.

A bigger revelation is that in the absence of top ranked P Vighney Reddy, Snehit has been given the top billing in the men category, thanks to his recent exploits in the Mahavir Institute-sponsored championship in Hyderabad that saw him scalp the RBI player. The three-day event, which will be inaugurated by local Legislator, Dr Puvvada Ajay Kumar at Sardar Patel Stadium here on Friday, is being jointly organised by Khammam District Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) and GTTA.

Ironically, the 16-year-old student of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, Snehit, who is also the top seed in youth and junior categories, hails from Gollapudi village of Wyra mandal in Khammam district, which, according to him will spur him on. “It has been happy hunting ground because I scored an emphatic double in the district’s first State ranking tournament in 2014," he said on Thursday. Meanwhile, Nikhat Banu and Akula Sreeja will be out to prove their material all over again, particularly in the women draw where they are seeded one and two.
