Even cricketers would think twice to participate in domestic events except when they needed to be back in the reckoning after being sidelined from national duty. It was rather strange when all the big guns participated in the national badminton championship recently.

A global ambassador has called upon all international performers to turn up in national events as it would help in bringing about quality and improve the standards of sport. That it comes from no less an admired personality like Viswanathan Anand makes it more relevant.

He has urged all professional to take time to participate in national events as a means to bolster the confidence levels of those waiting in the wings.
The 47-year-old said that celebrity champions will also draw the attention of the media and sponsors.

The five-time world champion was speaking to the media in the sprawling Kompally campus of DRS International School of which he is the brand ambassador.

Hailing the computer revolution that has revolutionised chess, the first Rajiv Khel Ratna winner said that this augured well for those into the sport as now there were more avenues for the players to hone their skills and master the winning moves.

The Lightning Kid singled out Grand Masters Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, Bhaskaran Adhiban and SP Sethuraman for special praise while contenting that seniors like Pentyala Harikrishna and K Sasikiran were being made to sweat it out.

In keeping with his down-to-earth approach, Anand regaled the students of the students while interacting with them and addressing several queries. He also had a busy time obliging autograph hunters, which reflected his popularity. Anand will be in action at the London Classic Chess, which is to be held from December 4 to 8.
