KRASNODAR (Russia): Luis Rubiales, the chief of the Spanish football federation confirmed on Wednesday that Julen Lopetegui, the coach of the Spain football team got fired two days before the team's opening game against Portugal at the 2018 World Cup.

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, Real Madrid hired Lopetegui as their next club manager to start working after the tournament held in Russia. There was a sparking conflict among the federation and the unhappy Spanish fans, during the timing of the announcement.

At a press conference which was severely delayed held at Spain's World Cup base in Krasnodar, Rubiales said that he felt Lopetegui's decision to join Madrid so close to the start of the tournament "obliged" him to take drastic action.

"I am here to say that we feel obliged to sack the national team manager" - said Rubiales.

Lopetegui had signed a contract extension until 2020 in the month of May. And Rubiales is reportedly angered because he was only informed of his decision to join Real Madrid minutes before the European champions made their announcement public.

The team management has not decided regarding who will take charge over Spain. As they face the European champions Portugal on Friday in Sochi.

Julen Lopetegui was appointed as the coach of Spain in the year 2016 July. He led the team through the journey of their World cup with 20 unbeaten games.

La Roja was among the favourites to lift the trophy this summer but this bump which had taken place. At this point of the tournament, will surely affect the players. The astonishing developments of the past two days could have devastating affect on their chances in their tournament.

"I have spoken with the players and what I can guarantee is that the players will do everything in their power, along with the new Technical team to take the team as far as possible”, said Rubiales.
