Warangal: Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) Mayor Nannapaneni Narender has expressed confidence that Warangal would be included in the second list of Smart Cities as part of the India Smart Cities Challenge.

He made a presentation in this connection at the ‘Mayors’ Conclave and Leadership Summit’ at the second Smart Cities India Expo-2016 held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi from May 11 to 13.

Explaining the proceedings of the conclave, the Mayor said during his presentation on Thursday the case of Warangal in the Smart City Challenge was presented, stressing on the importance of including the city in the smart cities list.

The expo, which was inaugurated by union railways minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu and supported by numerous government departments and attended by 325 companies from across 40 countries, was a fruitful experience, Mayor Narender told The Hans India.

It helped to learn how to promote best practices in urban policy innovation, exchange ideas, share knowledge, to take up meaningful and sustainable measures in developing smart cities.

The focus areas of discussions were clean energy, education and skills to build smart cities, e-governance; green buildings, IT and communications, smart environment; smart transport; urban planning, waste and water management, he said.

“Warangal was ranked 21st in the first of 20 smart cities announced by the centre, it missed the first list by a whisker. Hopefully the city would be included in the second list to be announced soon,” he added.

Narender informed that he shared ideas on smart cities development with Vadodara Urban Development Authority chairman NV Patel, Amsterdam Smart City senior adviser Frans-Anton Vermast, Amravati Smart City principal collaborator Sunil Deshmukh and others.
