Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Thursday nominated senior leaders D Srinivas and V Lakshmikantha Rao as its candidates for the two vacancies from the state in the Rajya Sabha.

Lakshmikant Rao is a close relative of former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao and participated in the Indo-Pak war. Rao has been close to KCR and had played an active role in the agitation for separate state.

Rao had represented Huzurabad constituency as MLA and also served as a minister in the coalition government of YS Rajasekhar Reddy between 2004 and 2005.

While it was foregone conclusion that Rao would be sent to Rajya Sabha, it is said that the name of Srinivas, a former state Congress president who was a senior minister in the government of undivided Andhra Pradesh and had joined TRS last July was supported by K Kavitha. Srinivas is at present an adviser to the state government on inter-state issues.

Thanking the Chief Minister for proposing his name for the Rajya Sabha, Srinivas said that he would help the Chief Minister in achieving the dream of Bangaru Telangana.

Talking to reporters after the party announced candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections, Srinivas said, “The main aim of the Chief Minister is to develop the state.

I will play my role in achieving the goals set by the him to make Telangana bangaru Telangana, he said. He said that KCR had given him a special responsibility to the serve the state by going to Delhi. “I have good relations in Delhi and I assure to support the CM on his directions,” said Srinivas.

It may be mentioned here that when Srinivas was in Congress he had made serious efforts to go to Rajya Sabha but they did not fructify.

Srinivas said that many had said many things when he joined TRS. “Somebody said there will be no future but I didn’t take them seriously. You are seeing for the last one year… people will appreciate when we are with a positive approach.

The Chief Minister has seen my abilities and wanted to use my services to achieve Bangaru Telangana,” said Srinivas. Replying to a question on Congress fielding V Hanumanth Rao, DS said that anybody can contest elections in a democratic set up.

Srinivas made his political debut in 1982. He contested from Nizamabad Assembly seat in 1983. He was in Assembly poll fray eight times from different constituencies and played a key role in the party at both the national and state levels.

He lost in 1989 and 1994 elections but again emerged victorious in 1999 and 2004 Assembly elections. He was elected to Legislative Council in 2011 and was made leader of opposition.

He joined TRS after Congress denied him a second tenure in the council. Term of two members of Rajya Sabha from the state is due to expire next month. These members are V Hanumantha Rao (Congress) and Gundu Sudha Rani (TDP), who crossed over to TRS last October.

In the 120-member Telangana Legislative Assembly, TRS has 82 members, followed by Congress (19), MIM (7), BJP (5), TDP (3), CPI (1), CPI (M) (1), Nominated (1), Independent (1). TRS can get two of its candidates elected on its own strength.

TRS on Thursday also decided to nominate former minister Fareeduddin as its candidate for the MLC seat vacated by state Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao. The minister got elected as an MLA in the recent bypoll.
