Hyderabad: Telangana Auto Drivers JAC has condemned the “double standards” of the TRS government over increasing the bus fares on the pretext of TSRTC incurring losses,

but at the same time it had failed to turn its attention to the problems being faced by the auto-rickshaw drivers and their just demand for increase the auto fares on a par with the neighbouring States.

Mohd Amanullah Khan, K Lakshminarsaiah, M A Saleem, D Ravinder and Mizra Rafath Baig, JAC leaders, in a joint press statement, pointed out that the main reason behind auto-rickshaw drivers refusing to ply their vehicle on metre was that the existing fares were unrealistic. The government fixed the minimum fare at Rs 20 and Rs 11 per km.

For instance, in Bengaluru city, the auto minimum fare is Rs 25 and Rs 13 per km. They said the existing auto fares were fixed by then Congress government led by Kiran Kumar Reddy in February 2014.

Meanwhile, the prices of essential commodities had been almost doubled and as a consequence, the poor drivers were finding it difficult to provide support to their families.

Besides, the cost of vehicle operation and particularly the third party vehicle insurance charges had been increased from Rs 2,900 to Rs 4,800 a year. As such, they demanded that the TRS government increase the auto fares on a par with other States without further delay, they added.
