Warangal: At around 3 pm on Monday, suddenly the public address system at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium came to life with the voice of Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu asking his subordinates to assemble at the shot put arena.

When the announcement was made, some of the personnel were taking a break after conducting the physical fitness tests for the candidates appearing for the constable recruitment tests and the others were trying their hand at the shot put and other events.

Then, there was an announcement again from the police boss to the officials to get ready to compete with each other in the shot put event. It was a pleasant surprise for the personnel who have been toiling in the JNU Stadium, conducting the physical fitness tests for the last 10 days.

“Come on boys, it’s time to show your skills,” the Commissioner cheered the officials while announcing cash prizes for the first three places. With the likes of Additional DCP M Yadaiah and Administrative Officer P Swaroopa Rani jumping into the ring, there was a sudden change in the atmosphere in the stadium.

The seriousness that was witnessed for the last few days on the tense faces of candidates appearing for the fitness tests was now seen on officials’ faces. A host of senior officials including ACPs P Sobhan Kumar, P Ravinder Rao, K Eshwar Rao, B Janardhan, SM Surendranath, S Mahender and Ch Venkateshwara Rao and eight inspectors, 12 sub-inspectors and three reserve inspectors also participated in the event.

While the CCS Inspector R Narender finished first recording a distance of 9.87 meters, Station Ghanpur Inspector P Kishan and Madikonda SI P Vignan Rao finished second and third with 9.20 meters and 8.90 meters respectively. Interestingly, all these officials are aged around 40 years. The other officials also fared better than one would have expected.

According to the police officials, none of the candidates who participated in the SI and constable recruitment tests so far had matched the feat of Narender. But for one or two, none of the candidates was successful to record even the 8.90 meters in the recently held tests, it’s learnt. Later, the Commissioner gave away cash prizes Rs 2,500, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,500 – to the officials who finished top three.
