Adilabad: Even six decades after the country achieved independence, lives of adivasis have not changed for the better. The quest of these people for food, drinking water, medicines and land rights still continues.

Some tribal women are even being trafficked on the pretext of jobs to distant places like Rajasthan and UP where they are forced into flesh trade.

Residents of Dharmajipeta thanda in Utnoor mandal in the district are living in abject poverty. Patel of the village Madavi Manik Rao told The Hans India on Wednesday that they consumed rice only twice a week.

The tribals have been facing hardships to collect their daily rations from Girijan Coopeative Society outlet, which is 15 km away.

Children in the thanda, inhabited by at least 50 families, are suffering from anaemia. The anganwadi centre is not being allotted food supplies not even once in a year to provide food to the villagers. They survive on roti and gruel.

A tribal youth of the village, Sidam Simbu, lamented that though the tribals have been tilling the forest lands for the past 30 years, they have not been vested with rights so far. Due to this, they are being denied bank loans and other benefits intended for farmers.

According to a conservative estimate, during the current season, 64 tribals died due to lack of medical care. It is alleged that the medical officers at remote hospitals at Narnoor, Tiryani, Vankidi and Utnoor are not staying locally.

The patients are referred to other hospitals in case of viral fevers. The primary health centers are not working. Doctors come here once in a week. Meanwhile, nurses management the show.

Taking advantage of innocence of tribal women, some miscreants living in the Agency areas trafficked one Lalita Bai (name changed) of Saleguda to Rajasthan and UP.

In Kerimery, Tiryyani, Indravelli and Utnoor mandals, women in their teens are forced into flesh trade.

Lalita Bai’s brother lamented that he had received a phone call from his sister who said she was sold into flesh trade. He is appealing to the police to take steps to check the trafficking in women from these areas.
