Khammam: Freedom fighter Ayitham Venkateswarlu of Dendukuru village in Madhira mandal was felicitated by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on August 9 as part of 70th anniversary celebrations of Quit India Movement. People of the district hailed the Central government’s decision to honour the freedom fighter in recognition of the key role he played in the Independence movement and the Telangana armed struggle. The felicitation will help motivate the present generation to strive for nation building by getting inspiration from role models like Venkateswarlu, they said.

Born to Seshaiah and Subhadramma in 1933, he grew up with progressive thinking and ideology. Inspired by the call given by Mahatma Gandhi, Venkateswarlu joined the freedom movement.

Like all other freedom fighters, he also sacrificed a lot to get independence to the country from the British rule. He got a memorable association with Mahatma Gandhi, who spent a day in Khammam during the freedom movement.

He is a contemporary of former chief minister Jalagam Vengal Rao. Venkateswarlu worked as a dalam commander in the Telangana armed struggle against the tyranny of Nizam and also fought against the atrocities of Razakars. Risking his life, he participated in the guerrilla fight against Razakars. Even after the Independence, he has been leading an ideal life.
