Hyderabad: The Gachibowli police in coordination with Medak Child Line officials on Wednesday rescued 19 children from the clutches of an alleged trafficker. The children, who were lured into an orphanage, were forced to beg in the streets, the police said.

On a tip-off, the Gachibowli police on Wednesday caught four children, who were found begging near a traffic signal. During questioning, the children, all aged below 14 years, spilled the beans they lived in an ashram at Ameenpur in Medak district and they were forced to beg one Jamesh.

A team of police along with Child Line officials of Medak raided ‘Brahmaputra Social Services Society Orphanage’ and caught Jamesh who was illegally running the orphanage. The officials rescued 19 of 37 children.

On enquiry, it was found that on the pretext of providing shelter for the homeless, Jamesh had lured the orphans and brought them to the ashram. He used to drop the children daily at various traffic junctions in the morning and pick them up again in the evening.

The children were forced to beg and give the money earned to Jamesh. The accused was running another ashram illegally at Yellandu village in Khammam district where 20 children were being sheltered.

Medak Child Line officer M S Chandra said the children were found living in unhygienic conditions. The ashram was being run illegally and the children were rescued and sent to juvenile homes.

A criminal case has been booked against Jamesh. The rescued children were handed over to the district child welfare officers for their rehabilitation, said Gachibowli Inspector Ramesh.
