Hyderabad: The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) presided by its Chairman Ram Charan has asked Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States to advise farmers in their respective states not to go for raising of crops, particularly wet crops, unless the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar Projects (NSP) get enough inflows.

According to KRMB Member Secretary Sameer Chatterjee, both the State governments were advised to this effect keeping in view the current storage position of the reservoirs and the drinking water needs for the remaining part of the water year i.e., up to June 2017.

The KRMB meeting held here on Friday discussed, among others, the sharing of water between the two Telugu-speaking States. Sources said that while AP placed a demand for 47 tmcft of water, TS pegged its water demand at 40 tmcft. The AP has asked for the release of entire quantum of its water in one month’s time. Opposing this, the TS said that the release of water should be spread over a period of three months.

Responding to the water demands, the member secretary said that the total water available for utilisation in Srisailam and NSP as on August 24 was 83.50 tmcft, excluding losses. At the same time, he reminded the officials participating from both the States that they “have been placing their indents before the three member committee, without submitting availability of water and water usage account, including minor irrigation and justification of priority of their water needs.”

Sameer Chatterjee also expressed his disappointment over the project authorities of both the States not implementing the KRMB water release orders in letter and spirit. Taking into account the demands of both the States, it was decided to convene the committee meeting on Saturday.

The meeting would take a decision on water release for next one month instead of piecemeal placing of indents by the States and its approval by the KRMB. Following, the KRMB remarks, both the State governments agreed to provide water accounts for minor irrigation and evaporation losses which are required to take decision on eligibility of share of each State, the member secretary said after the meeting.

The meeting also discussed installing the telemetry system in Srisailam and NSP to oversee the usage of water. For this, the AP has agreed to deposit an amount of Rs 2.5 crore initially, which would be followed by an equally shared amount by both the States at the end of the financial year.

In addition to this, the demand of the TS for equal allocation of Krishna water between the two States to provide water supply to the common capital of Hyderabad had also come up for discussion. However, KRMB officials reportedly expressed inability to make allocations on such basis.

Further, the TS demand for allocation of Krishna water on account of AP diverting Godavari river water to Krishna basin through Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) also figured in the meeting.
