Hyderabad: The State government has decided to take River Godavari water to Visakhapatnam city at the earliest and has cleared a proposal to this effect with an estimated cost of Rs 1,638 crore, on Friday.

The proposal is similar to that of the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) though which the Godavari water has been diverted to Krishna delta.

The river water would be lifted from the left bank of the river near Purushothapatnam in East Godavari district to fill up the Yeleru reservoir through the Polavaram Irrigation Project‘s Main Left Canal.

As per the action plan submitted by the Engineering-in-Chief of the Polavaram Irrigation Project the water would be lifted in two stages.

The first lift of water would be taken from River Godavari to delivery cistern to left main canal and from there the water would be taken to Yeleru reservoir.

Once it is completed about 3,500 cusecs of flood water of Godavari would be diverted to Yeleru Reservoir. This would allow supplementation of water to the existing ayacut under Yeleru River.

According to sources in Irrigation Department, the Polavaram Irrigation Project will provide 23.4 tmc ft of water to Vizag and power generation of 960 MW.
