Swachh toilets yet to see light of day

Hyderabad: About 109 pre-fabricated public toilets built at 109 places in twin cities as part of last year’s Swachh Bharat campaign are not accessible to people even today. The toilets have been built spending Rs 5 lakh each. Following a resolution adopted by the GHMC Standing Council meeting held on August 31 last year, the toilets were built on a war-footing. The contract has been awarded to Pennar Engineering Consultancy. The cost for each toilet quoted almost equals the double bedroom houses for the poor announced by the State government.

Though the toilets were completed a year ago, they are yet to be declared open. Wherever they were inaugurated their use was only a three-day affair. Not granting additional funds for their maintenance rendered the toilets useless. They were found under locked at many places.
According to a survey conducted by the Common Man’s Forum, at some places toilet seats were stolen. Similarly, mugs and other electrical fittings were found missing at many places. Out of 109, there is no account for 13 toilets. Speaking to The Hans India, forum president Jaya Prakash said that the toilets were not found anywhere in Chiranjeevi Blood Bank area, Income-Tax quarters area and Radhika Talkies road.
Since the toilets become unoperational, people are found easing themselves near these toilets leading to emission of a reeking smell. Unfortunately, the situation prevailed near some bus stops. Forum representative Prem Kumar has been demanding the authorities that they bring the toilets into use to prevent wastage of public money.
