DUBIOUS DISTINCTION

Hyderabad: Traffic in Hyderabad is moving below 10 km per hour, the first time that the movement of traffic is so slow in its 425-year-old history. In 2010, Centre for Environment Studies study put the average speed of traffic movement at 10 km per hour, in 1981 it was 18 km per hour.

Traffic snarls have not only hit the common man but also almost everyone. The Telangana State Road Transport Organisation (TSRTC) and Uber addressed official letters to Traffic Police on the slow movement of traffic and how it is making a dent into their revenues in April this year. Falling revenues for TSRTC in Greater Hyderabad is a cause of concern for the Corporation as travel time is increased with each passing day.

Sample this: The travel time from Secunderabad to Kondapur, a distance of 21 km, takes Dharmaiah, the bus driver of 10H, two hours and the time he is given by the TRSRTC authorities is 1 hour-10 minutes to cover the distance. Likewise, the time taken by bus No. 5M from Secunderabad to Mehdipatnam, covering a distance of 17 km, is 90 minutes and the time given by the TSRTC is 45 minutes.

Drivers said a few years ago they used to make several trips a day, but on some routes by the time they make 2-3 trips, their shift is over. Lane splitting between cars and buses by two-wheelers, bad roads and utter indiscipline is taking a toll on bus drivers. A V Rangnath, DCP, Traffic said, “Traffic time has drastically increased especially after the rains this year. A study on the traffic movement is underway which includes solutions. We are on the job.”

With Metro Rail works still going on, commuters, especially those travelling from and towards Begumpet, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Dilsukhnagar, Uppal and other areas in the city, are spending a lot of time commuting. Anurag Srivastava, a software professional, said, “I have remodelled the way I work.

Now I complete few household chores like paying bills while I return home or catch up with the article that missed out reading in the morning.” Traffic congestion is not just the inability of the civic infrastructure as much as the unruly way in which the people commute said Raghav, a trader. No doubt Hyderabad is moving at snail’s pace.
