Hyderabad: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) officials are examining a proposal to hand over certain routes to private operators as way to improve the financial position of the corporation.

According to sources, at a recent meeting, the corporation officials discussed the possibility of handing over some of the routes to private operators.

For this, the corporation may calculate the traffic density on those routes and fix the amount to be charged from the private operators.

The proposal would rid the corporation of all responsibilities except that of providing a conductor on routes that are handed over to private operators

Apart from its regular fleet, the RTC runs hired buses on certain routes. As per the contractual agreement, the corporation and the owner of the bus share the income generated, while the operational and fuel costs are borne by the private transporters who own the buses.

The corporation only provides conductor for the purpose of ticketing and the conductor deposits the collections with the respective managers. There are close to 2,200 hired buses that are run by the corporation on different routes.

If the proposal, presently in an embryonic stage, is approved, the resulting arrangement would rid the corporation of all responsibilities except that of providing a conductor on routes that are handed over to private operators.

The tickets would be issued at the depot where the journey starts and so there would be no need for issuing TIMs (ticket issuing machines). Sources said that this was being implemented on some routes in Andhra Pradesh.

Officials explained that it costs about Rs 38 per km to operate an RTC bus. The revenue the corporation earns from tickets is Rs 33, thereby resulting in a loss of Rs 5 per kilometer.

According to the officials, the corporation operates buses on 10,733.80 lakh kilometers per annum. It has a fleet of 10,329 buses in 95 depots across the State. The average fuel consumption of high speed diesel (HSD) oil is 2,096 lakh liters.
