Although, the MCI makes inspections every year, the doctors at the medical college remain callous and indifferent though they are fully aware of the fact that that the inspection team will visit every year in the month of October.

Nizamabad: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has administered a shock to the Government Medical College in the town on Sunday by denying permission for the academic year 2017-18. This is because there is lack of basic infrastructure facilities, absence of adequate teaching and non-teaching staff and the indifference of the doctors.

Although, the MCI makes inspections every year, the doctors at the medical college remain callous and indifferent though they are fully aware of the fact that that the inspection team will visit every year in the month of October.

Even the construction of new buildings was not taken up. The MCI, which inspects the college twice a year, had warned the management of the college earlier to rectify the defects.

It is the State government that is bearing the brunt of their callousness while the college has lot 100 medical seats. Also, Osmania Medical College has lost 50 medical seats. A letter has been sent to the government in this regard.

However, the MCI said that it would grant permission and restore the number of medical seats if the basic infrastructure facilities are restored depending on the State government’s report. It said that corrective steps have to be taken. The management is accused of not mending its ways in spite of District Collector Yogita Rana cautioning the management several times to change its style of functioning.

Bright students who get good ranks in EAMCET join in the Nizamabad Medical College and the pass percentage every year is between 80 and 90 per cent. In terms of pass percentage, the college is better placed than the Osmania Medical College. However, due to the negligence of the doctors and the Professors in taking classes, the MCI has declined to give permission for the next year. As a result, the students are an extremely worried lot.

Although the medical college has been set up four years ago and the first batch of medical students are on the verge of completion of their course, the MCI has denied recognition citing the violation of stipulated guidelines as the reason. It said that the educational standards have fallen. Even the people of the district, especially parents of students are worried over the fallout of the MCI decision.

The teaching posts in the medical college like the posts of Professor and Associate Professors have not been filled up and the vacancies remain. The present teaching staff are irregular in taking classes.

The doctors at the college are busy pursing their private practice instead of coming to the government hospital to examine the patients though there is scope to attend on 1000 or 800 out- patients every day. Many of them remain in Hyderabad and come to the medical college once in a blue moon to take classes. Moreover, adequate number of books is not made available to the students.

However, speaking to The Hans India here on Sunday, Principal of the Medical College Dr Indira denied that the college violated guidelines of MCI. She said that the teaching posts have been filled up after the MCI inspections. She said that 21 assistant professors were promoted. She expressed the hope that the college would receive permission from the MCI for the next academic year after the State government submits its report.

Meanwhile, students unions have been staging protest demonstrations over the withdrawal of permission, the indifferent attitude of college staff and the negligence of the people’s representatives. They are also angry with the District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana for not showing any interest in the affairs of the medical college.

The Nizamabad MP K Kavitha assured the students that she would take up their issue with the State government and the MCI and ensure that their interests are protected. She also spoke to the State Health Minister Dr Lakshma Reddy and the District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana in this regard.
