Warangal: Come Wednesday, Warangal Commissionerate Police, which has earned the distinction of first NBW-free city in the country, could well set a record of sorts that likely to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records. Kudos to Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu. It all started some eight days ago when the Commissioner decided to organise a one-day Swashakti programme to impart different self-defence techniques to college girls and women to make them more self-reliant and to keep a tab on eve teasers.

As part of the initiative, the police invited those interested to register their names online on http://www.sheteamwarangal. com/ website. Initially, the police targeted the participation of around 5,000 women and college girls to take part in the programme. However, it turned out be a massive response with more than 27,000 women and girls enrolling their names for the programme. Stumbled upon by the huge response, the police boss verified the world records.

Much to his surprise, the previous world record titled “Largest self-defence class at a single venue” was held by South American Krav Maga Federation which organised Krav Maga, an Israel self-defence technique, lesson at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) on May 29, 2010 in which 2,212 people participated. The lesson was directed by Master Kobi Lichtenstein (Israel) on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the birth of Imi Lichtenfeld, the creator of Krav Maga, and the 20th anniversary of the presence of Krav Maga in Brazil.

Speaking to The Hans India, Sudheer Babu said: “The plan is to create a sense of confidence among college girls and women. We were surprised by the overwhelming the response.” He said that a women martial arts expert from Hyderabad is coming up with her team and she will be assisted by 200-odd local trainers.

The records management team of the Guinness Book of World Records has sent an e-mail to the Commissioner accepting the record attempt (Application Reference: 161214063053lsc) titled “Largest selfdefence class”. Meanwhile, the police have begun arrangements for the conduct of the event at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on December 21. DGP Anurag Sharma will be the chief guest for the event.
