Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) have locked horns over maintenance of parks and flyovers, with revenues being the bone of contention.

Officials point out that HMDA authorities want to keep only substantial revenue-generating parks like Lumbini, NTR Gardens etc with them and hand over to GHMC the maintenance of flyovers and parks, which do not generate any income.

Besides, the HMDA proposes to maintain the 11.6-km PV Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway. The HMDA has been maintaining about 40 parks and generating about Rs 65 lakh in revenues annually, whereas the GHMC, which maintains over 1,000 parks, gets Rs 1 crore in revenues per annum.

The corporation officials claim that have asked the HMDA authorities to hand over all parks in the GHMC limits, including Lumbini, NTR Gardens and People's Plaza. However, the HMDA was reluctant to do so for obvious reasons.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that they had now sought the intervention of the government to resolve the matter. The source said that HMDA had recently approached the civic authorities offering to maintain not only non-income generating parks, but also the PV Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway.

The official further said the corporation was ready to take over the maintenance of parks and other properties in the GHMC limits. He said that major parks, including NTR Gardens, and Lumbini Park, alone generated Rs 7 lakh income annually. The HMDA had hiked the ticket prices of the top three parks, generating additional revenues.
