Tribals oppose Chellappa panel recommendations
Tribal Unions Coordination Committee has strongly opposed the recommendations of ‘Chellappa Commission’ which was constituted to inquire the educational, social and economic backwardness of Muslims and the STs/tribals in the State.
Hyderabad: Tribal Unions Coordination Committee has strongly opposed the recommendations of ‘Chellappa Commission’ which was constituted to inquire the educational, social and economic backwardness of Muslims and the STs/tribals in the State.
They said that if the policy is implemented then it would be an injustice to the existing tribes like Khaita Lambada and Boya Valmiki communities which are included in the list of tribes recognised by the State.
During a round table conference organised by Girijana Aikya Vedika, the participants demanded the government to review its decision, as crucial aspects related to Tribes of Telangana were ignored in the report.
They resolved to launch an agitation across the State, if the government fails to pay heed to their demands. Debating over the issue, Prof A Nageshwar Rao strongly opposed the move as 30 local tribes would have to compete with much stronger tribes which migrated from other States.
He also said that the government was also trying to brand the Schedule Castes as tribes, which would do injustice to the very purpose of reservation based on historic diversity. “Castes are different from Tribes, which cannot be merged together without constitutional mandate,” he said.
He said the government should scrap the committee and its recommendations. If it fails to do so, they would take up agitations, he cautioned.
Working President of Girijana Aikya Vedika, K Vivek Vinayak recalled that the former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had also tried to mess with the existing list of Tribals, but could not do so. Similarly, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was experimenting with the existing set up of Tribals.
