Warangal: Notwithstanding netizens’ increasingly addictive and immersive experiences with multiple smart devices over the years, there is still undying passion for kite flying. The Telangana International Kite Festival (Kite-2017) that dotted the skylines of Warangal with a riot of colours on Tuesday, drawing thousands of denizens, reasserted the fact that the frenzy for the roaring war cry ‘kaate’, while exulting over a patang cut, is still intact among the people.

The sprawling Arts College Grounds appeared too small even on Tuesday with people gathering in large numbers to witness the extravaganza in which fliers from 31 nations showcased different kinds of kites. What thrilled most visitors was the variety of kites that ranged in size from small (like the traditional ones) to as big as 25 meters. They oohed and aahed even more when they learnt the prices of the kites. The prices of the kites on display ranged from a few rupees to $ 6000 (little over Rs 4 lakh).

Sharing her four-decade-old passion for kite flying, 66-year-old Endang Dradjat of Jakarta, Indonesia told The Hans India: “I journeyed round the world visiting at least 100 countries, but the hospitality extended by the people in Warangal is exceptional.” Dwelling over the evolution of kites, Endang, member of the prestigious Kite Museum of Indonesia, said that nowadays their kites were more of balloon type and of course very costly.

John Tan (55) of Singapore, who was here along with his wife as part of AlFarsi Kite Team of Kuwait, said that he started flying kites at the age of nine years. “The wind speed here is good enough to get the kite up 15 kmph to 30 kmph wind speed is ideal,” said John, who had visited 30-odd countries, while referring to his best experience in European countries.

Stating that the first fest in Warangal was a huge success, Telangana Tourism secretary Burra Venkatesham said: “Next year, we will organise night kite festival here besides presenting remote-controlled kites. Our target is to pitchfork Warangal on international tourism map.”

In all, 40 foreigners and 100 domestic fliers participated in the Kite Festival. Earlier in the day, the Kite-2017 participants visited Warangal Fort and took part in Heritage Walk. Warangal Urban district Collector Amrapali, Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu, Mayor N Narender, MLA Vinay Bhaskar, Municipal Commissioner Sruthi Ojha and numerologist Daivagna Sharma took part in the fest.
