Hyderabad: The State government has come out with an action plan to give facelift to select religious places –temples, masjids and churches – as a way to promote religious tourism in Telangana.

According to official sources, the government proposes to select certain important religious places and develop them on the lines of Yadadri (formerly known as Yadagirigutta) temple -- the abode of Lord Laxmi Narasimha Swamy.

The State Tourism Department in coordination with the State Wakf Board and the Endowments Department (custodian of the religious places) has enlisted nearly 50 historical and religious places that have potential to be developed for promoting religious tourism.

The list incudes Shakthipeetham, Jogulamba temple in Mahabubnagar district; Jainath temple ( Adilabad); Bhadrakali and Ramappa Temple (Warangal); Koti Lingeswara Swamy temple, Bada Pahad darga ( Nizamabad); Dargah Jahangir Peeran ( Hyderabad ); Annaram Shareef darga ( Warangal); Dargah Hazrat Baba Sharfuddin darga ( Ranga Reddy) and historical Medak Cathedral.

The push for religious tourism would also help in creating jobs and generating additional income for local people. Local infrastructure and civic facilities would be improved as part of tourism promotion.

After Yadadri was accorded priority, the number of domestic and international tourists visiting the temple increased substantially. As a result, hospitality business and realty trade also grew multifold in the temple town.

The Tourism Department also undertook a study on the need for developing basic infrastructure like road network, board facilities and transportation at the identified places. Based on the study report, the government would earmark specific funds for every religious place in the 2017-18 Budget to be presented in March this year.

The officials hinted that the budget for the promotion of religious tourism would be doubled. A sum of Rs 200 crore was allocated for religious tourism in the 2016-17 Budget.
