Hyderabad: Although reforms being implemented in prisons have started yielding good results, there are still some habitual offenders and hardcore criminals who gang up inside prisons and plot their future operations. Cases of notorious criminals operating from the four walls of the prison through nefarious means are not far to seek.

All these things may eventually become history in Telangana as the State Prisons Department is set to install CCTV cameras in the barracks of all the prisons very soon. The government has already released Rs 10 crore for the purpose.

“We sent proposals for installation of CCTV cameras in all the prisons some time back. The government has approved the proposal and released Rs 10 crore for the purpose in the current financial year,” Director General of Prisons V K Singh told The Hans India.

The department had sent the proposals after doing ground work such as identifying the best service providers in this field. Tenders would be called and all measures taken to install the CCTVs at the earliest, a senior official said. In the first phase, CCTVs would be installed in the three central prisons – Chanchalguda, Cherlapally and Warangal. Later, the scheme would be expanded to district prisons and then to the sub-jails, the official said.

The CCTV cameras, connected to the control rooms in every prison and also monitored from the prison headquarters, would keep an eagle eye on every movement of the prison inmates, their grouping and discussions so as to assess their moves after their release, the official said.
The CCTVs cameras would be installed not only at the entrance and in the prison compound, but also in each barrack and corridors of the prison cells.

This will reduce, to some extent, the burden on prison guards, the official said. The CCTVs would help prevent formation of gangs inside the prison and consumption of marijuana, illegal use of mobile phones and any other kind of illegal or immoral activities, another official said.

It would also help check corruption among the prison staff as some of the black sheep might allow prisoners access to marijuana and other barred items in return for tips and bribes, the official said.
