Hyderabad: The bid by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to build multi-level parking is receiving lukewarm response from the contractors. This is considered to be a severe setback to the GHMC.

It may be recalled that contractors had earlier shied away from taking up construction of double bedroom scheme as well.

What is shocking is that only one bidder participated for the construction of two parking complexes at Khilwat and Charminar at an estimated to cost Rs 62 crore. In the past, not less than 90 contractors used to complete with each other in taking up construction of one or other project.

Sources said the GHMC during phase I had proposed to construct two parking complexes at Khilwat and Charminar at an estimated cost of Rs 62 crore. Earlier this month, the civic body had invited tenders in this regard. Surprisingly, only one bidder had participated in the process.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the lukewarm response was a source of great consternation. Private contractors were not ready to take up the project for the fear that the GHMC was not in a position clear the bills during or after completing the project, the official added.

Private contractors said that the civic body was facing financial crunch and that was why they were scared to take up works.

The official further said that the several other reasons might have influenced private contractors to keep away. Location of parking complexes has been one of the reasons for not taking up the project as both Khilwat and Charminar were commercial stretches, opined a senior official.

"Due to the wholesale market, it is congested throughout the day and it would be a herculean task to convince locals in the area", he said. However, the official said that the GHMC would seek suggestions from the State government to make multi-level parking successful. He also said that the corporation would likely include budget for complexes in the next financial year (2017-18).

Meanwhile, the corporation has proposed to construct as many as 50 multi-level parking complexes across the city. The multilevel automated car parking facilities would decongest parking spaces. Once completed, each will accommodate 500 four wheelers and 300 two-wheelers.
