DELAY IN PRESIDENT GIVING ASSENT

Hyderabad: State government has altered the priorities in execution of irrigation projects in the backdrop of the High Court quashing the 123 GO and the State Land Acquisition Bill not yet getting President’s assent. The State Assembly passed the amendment to the 2013 Land Acquisition Act. The government has called a halt to the works of the prestigious Palamuru –Ranga Reddy lift irrigation scheme, Dindi, Kaleshwaram, Tummidihatti, Medigadda and Chanaka Korata. They require huge lands for digging canals and laying pipelines.

Top officials of the Irrigation Department told The Hans India that nearly 60,000 to 70,000 acres of land was required to complete the major irrigation projects. So far, just 25,000 acres of land had been acquired. In some cases, Environmental clearances were needed to utilise forest land. The government had called for a halt to land acquisition after the court quashed the government order 123. The engineers and in-charges of all the projects were asked to stop the works until the land acquisition issue was resolved.

The government, according to officials, had decided to complete the works of 36 ongoing projects for which there was no need for land acquisition. The projects include 16 major projects like SRSP stage- 2, Sripadasagar – Yellampalli, Kaleshwaram lift project, Indiramma Sagar, Kalwakurthi, Neettempadu, Bheema and Koilsagar would be completed by this year-end . The medium irrigation projects Kinnerasani, Palem, odikuntavagu, Gollavagu, Ralivagu, Komarambheem project and Gaddenna- Suddavagu projects and modernisation projects – Nizam Sagar and Nagarjuna Sagar would also be completed in a time bound manner.

Officer on Special Duty to Irrigation Department Sridhar Rao Deshpande said earlier it was planned to complete all major projects by the end of 2017 and 2018 . Now, it would take more time to complete the projects as land acquisition was the main hurdle before the government.
