Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started nala desilting works to the tune of Rs 30.18 crore along 100 kilometres of length of nalas in all the circles from Tuesday. This is the first time that the GHMC is desilting nalas five months prior to the rainy season.

Every year the GHMC takes up these works one or two months before the onset of monsoon, but this time, as per the direction of Minister for Municipal Administration and MA&UD K T Rama Rao, city Mayor Bonthu Rammohan called for tenders well in advance and started these works from Tuesday onwards.

After launching the desilting works at Nacharam and Meerpet, the Mayor said in yesteryears, these works were taken up two months prior to the monsoon. But keeping in new of the hardships the people have to undergo during rainy season, it has been decided to take up these works on priority basis five month prior to the monsoon season.

There are 951 kilometres-long major nalas, drains, small nalas, pipe drain etc in Greater Hyderabad, and all the desilting works are being taken up continuously throughout the year for more convenience and by 2017 end 100 works will be completed.

GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy said the desilting works were being taken up in all circles from Tuesday with modernised machines in major nalas and storm water drains with jetting machines. Wherever not possible, silt will be removed manually.

The engineers have also been asked to see that the digging is completed by May 31 so that road repairs are immediately taken up before the monsoon arrives. Storm water drain desilting work too should begin in all circles as the estimates have been prepared for Rs 30.18 crore for the year.

Storm water drains will be desilted for a length of 216 km of major ones through machine, another 735 km of minor drains are to be cleared with the help of recycler suction-cum-jetting machines and manually in narrow lanes where machines cannot go. Removed silt would be dumped in sites identified in each circle with preference for filling open trenches or low-lying areas.
