Hyderabad: ‘Wear Handlooms’, the trending hashtag is here to stay. Thanks to the huge support pouring in from all quarters to keep the sinking handloom industry afloat. It may be noted here that rattled by a spate of handloom workers’ suicides in Sircilla, KTR took up a massive campaign to patronage handloom clothes so that the livelihood of the weavers will be improved.

With the likes of actor Nagarjuna, his wife Amala and other celebrities supporting Minister KT Rama Rao’s call to save the weaving community, the Telangana State Handloom Weaver Co-Operative Society (TSCO) that looks after 380 primary societies providing work to around 13,000 weavers has witnessed a significant jump in its sales in last few weeks.

The TSCO made a business of nearly Rs 3 crore in January, Rs 50 lakh more than that it made in the previous month, December 2016. It may be noted here that average monthly sales of the TSCO is pegged at Rs 1.80 crore. The Cooperative has also made an online business of about Rs 50,000 in January through its website www.tsco.co.in.

So far in the 2016-17 financial year, Secunderabad division has recorded a sale of nearly Rs 11 crore, Karimnagar Rs 5 crore and Warangal Rs 3.5 crore, according to TSCO officials. With still a couple of months left for the closure of the financial year, the authorities are confident of a record business in the coming days.

The support offered by the actress and soon-to-be-part of Akkineni family Samantha, who recently engaged to Naga Chaitanya, has also come like a shot in the arm for the State government. Samantha, who met KTR a few days ago, offered support for the cause of the weavers, besides agreeing to be the brand ambassador of the TSCO.

“Getting market recognition is vital. The TSCO succeeded in creating a niche for itself in the market,” Vizia Pallavi Boyi, the TSCO Assistant Director (Marketing), told The Hans India. The Cooperative is leaving no stone unturned to promote the handlooms as it set up stalls at the Legislative Assembly, Council and all district Collectorates.

With the stocks flying off the shelves fast and quick, our focus is on procuring more stocks, she said, referring to the growing patronage to the handloom clothes since December last week.

The TSCO Hanamkonda branch senior manager E Uma Devi said that they sold about Rs 10 lakh clothes alone in Hanamkonda outlet last month. The average of sales of the outlet is around Rs 3 lakh a month, she said. Karimnagar branch manager Gajarla Pentaiah also echoed similar views.
