New Delhi: Minister for Transport P Mahender Reddy on Wednesday urged the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to sanction Rs 250 crore for the implementation of an action plan on road safety in the State.

He also urged the Minister to establish a National Transport Academy in Telangana as the State had prepared an action plan in consultation with several other departments to improve road safety in the country.

Reddy explained the Union Minister that growing number of casualties in road accidents was a growing cause of concern. State had taken up the task of implementing the road safety action plan to reduce the number of road accidents and to prevent the loss of human lives.

Later, speaking to the media, Reddy said that he submitted the proposals of the Action Plan to the Minister and sought Rs 30 crore for establishing an accident data base system, crash investigation and reconstruction, Rs 20 crore for establishing the road safety clubs in educational institutions, Rs 50 crore for Telangana Academy of Transport and Research, Rs 60 crore for establishing the heavy and light drivers training centres at ITIs' and Rs 90 crore for effective enforcement of the measures on the National and State highways.

Principal Secretary of Roads and Transport, Sunil Sharma, Principal Resident Commissioner, Arvind Kumar, and Additional DG of Road Safety and Railways, T Krishna Prasad accompanied the Minister.
