Hyderabad: Citing lukewarm response from the private firms, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has now come up with a proposal to give advertisement space to corporate companies in lieu of maintaining traffic islands and central medians across the city.

The GHMC had urged the private firms to take up maintenance of greenery in city under corporate social responsibility (CSR) for three years. Besides this, the civic body is also planning to hand over the maintenance of 85 fountains to private companies under CSR.

According to officials, the GHMC had earlier asked the private companies to maintain city greenery under CSR, but they did not show any interest. Hence, they have now decided to permit them to install advertising boards at every 100 metres stretch for maintaining traffic islands and central medians in all five zones in the city limits.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the city has 159 traffic islands and central medians spread over 40.33 acres. The officials are confident that the private companies would now come forward to take up the task since it would be a win- win situation for them. The GHMC would help and provide guidance for about a month on operation and maintenance of parks and fountains.

The official further said that the GHMC would enter into agreement with private companies for a period of three years. Once the MoU was signed it would be the responsibility of these companies to take up any repairs during the agreement period.

There are 5 traffic islands and central medians in the east zone spread over 0.43 acres, 30 in south zone spread over 8.39 acres, 59 in central Zone spread over 16.29 acres, 22 in west zone spread over 11.51 acres, and 43 in north zone spread over 3.71 acres.
