Hyderabad: University contract teachers have pinned hopes on centenary celebrations of Osmania University to get their services regularised on the basis of equal pay for equal work. Contract teachers are appealing to authorities to implement the Supreme Court verdict on equal pay for equal work. As per the UGC guidelines, they are entitled to receive a pay of Rs 48,600 but 90 per cent of them are drawing less than Rs 23,000 a month.
The contract teachers are as qualified as assistant professors, they are either UGC-JRF or NET qualified candidates and some of them have doctoral degrees and having published several research papers have been working for the past 25 years. In the universities set up during the past one decade, contract teachers are being paid a fixed amount ranging between Rs 16,500 and Rs 23,000 a month.
Talking to The Hans India, contract teachers’ association state president Rameshwara Rao said that paying such low wages is violation of UGC rules. He expressed that contract teachers who teach PG students draw only Rs 20,000 a month as against to high school teachers who earn Rs 50,000 a month.
He appealed to the authorities to regularise their service since have been working on contract basis for decades. Only those who have put in more than 25 years of service are being paid Rs 43,000 a month. He sought payment of at least a minimum wage of Rs 70,000 a month towards salaries.
There are 1,500 teachers working on contract basis in universities across Telangana. Osmania University accounts for the highest number of contract teachers-443. While JNTU has 305 contract teachers, there are 195 in Kakatiya University, 54 in Telangana University, 55 in Mahatma Gandhi University, 136 in Palamuru University and 48 in Satavahana University. In fact, they share majority of the responsibilities but a system of awarding leaves is not properly defined for them.
A faculty member of Nizam College, Kishan Rao, and Kakatiya University faculty member Burri Uma Sankar pointed out that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, at the height of Telangana movement, promised to regularise the services of contract teachers in universities.
They expressed resentment over continuation of the contract system, which the chief minister had promised to abolish. The contract teachers working in Palamuru University, Somesh Sridhar and Indrakaran Reddy, appealed to authorities to regularise services of the eligible contract teachers.
They quoted the instances of Delhi and Punjab universities regularising services of the contract teachers recently. University Arts College former principal PL Visweswara Rao said, “They are all well qualified. Without their services, classes could not be held in the OU campus,”.
