Bammera (Jangaon): The district administration has submitted a proposal worth Rs 50 crore to construct a memorial complex at the graveyard of great Telugu poet Bammera Pothana, informed District Collector A Devasena.

In the first phase, the government has released Rs 60 lakh towards developmental activities at Bammera village in Palakurthy mandal of the district. The Collector, accompanied by MLA E Dayakar Rao and Prof M Panduranga Rao of Kakatiya Heritage Trust on Friday visited ‘Samadhi’ of Pothana and offered prayers to Shiva Lingam installed there.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, she said efforts would be made to promote tourism at the village. ‘It is a great privilege for the people of Bammera that Pothana was born here. People here should learn and recite his poems and make them more popular,’ she told the villagers.

Devasena thanked Kakatiya Heritage Trust for acquiring the poet’s land and his Samadhi. The Trust handed over the land of about 4.30 acres to the district administration for taking up developmental activities.

Two roads would be laid to connect the Samadhi with main road soon, she added while MLA Dayakar Rao promised to extend all possible support from his side for the construction of memorial complex to develop the village.

Prof Panduranga Rao informed that the Trust had purchased the land cultivated by Pothana in the village from private people sometime ago. It was planned to convert the Samadhi into memorial, where a park would be developed.

Later on the day, the Collector interacted with a group of shepherds at Kundaram village and asked them to make use of the welfare schemes being offered by the State government. Tahsildar B Bansilal, MPTC D Krupakar, Sarpanch V Ellamma and others were present.
