Hyderabad/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised top bureaucrat Param Iyer for emptying a public toilet pit in Warangal during an exercise carried out in support of Swachh Bharat.

Speaking in his 29th episode of Mann ki Baat on Sunday, Modi specially praised IAS officer Param Iyer for setting an example for others. An event was organised in Warangal in which senior officers from 23 states took part, he said.

The Prime Minister then described the toilet pit emptying exercise carried out in Hyderabad on February 17 and 18. "Toilet pits in six houses were emptied and cleaned and the officers personally demonstrated that the used-up pits of twin-pit toilet can be emptied and then re-used.

"In these new technique toilets, there is absolutely no inconvenience or hesitation in emptying or cleaning these toilets and even the psychological barrier does not come in. We can ourselves clean these toilet pits just as we do other general cleaning," he said.

"This waste deposited in the pit gets completely decomposed in six to 12 months time," Modi said. “This decomposed waste can be safely handled quite conveniently and can be used as ‘NPK’ which is a very useful fertilizer. Our farmers know ‘NPK’ very well. It contains nutritious elements Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium in abundance and is considered a fertiliser of very good quality in the agriculture sector,” Modi added.

This exercise showed results; media in the country gave wide publicity and highlighted its importance. And it is quite natural because when people see an IAS officer cleaning a toilet pit himself, the fact is naturally noticed by the country, the PM said.

Iyer is currently serving as the Secretary for Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in the Central government. He shared his pictures of cleaning the toilet on his twitter handle on February 18.
