More fisheries cooperative societies in the offing
Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao has said a legislation to create more fisheries cooperative societies would be brought next year and two fisheries engineering colleges would be set up in the State, in addition to admitting children of fishermen in BC welfare schools.

At a meeting held between representatives of Industrial Fisheries Cooperative societies and the Minister which was chaired by District Collector P Venkatrama Reddy at the District Collectorate on Thursday, the representatives put forward their concerns which include bringing the lease of minor irrigation tanks directly under the fisheries department instead of Sarpanchs, reduction of fee collection and so on.
Harish Rao clarified that whatever returns come through the fish seed supplied by fisheries department, operations and sales expenses would be given to fishermen. He said that fishermen from Bestha-Gangaputra communities would have the first say in fisheries and advised them to not get into conflicts with Mudiraju community in matters concerning fisheries.
Adding that the government was serious about developing fisheries in the State as a major industry, he felt that there was immense potential in this sector to improve socio-economic conditions of communities dependent on fisheries for a livelihood.
