Oil palm is being grown in 17,000 hectares in Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts. The plan is to increase the area under the crop in the State.

The Committees have been set up to explore ways and means to increase the area under the crop in various districts, including Warangal, Mahabubabad and Bhupalapalli.

Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao sensitised the oil palm cultivation going on in Khammam district to a committee headed by Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy and Assembly Speaker Madhusudana Chary that visited Khammam recently.

Nageswara Rao said that efforts were on to increase the area under oil palm in Khammam district. He said that the profits generated out of the unit would go to farmers. Palmolein oil processing unit works are going on at a war-footing. All arrangements are being made to get it inaugurated by the Chief Minister. Plans are afoot to entrust management of the unit to farmers’ committees.

It would help them choose the remunerative price for the produce and the management will run smoothly. A decision on this will be taken in consultation with the Chief Minister.

The land in the state is suitable for oil palm cultivation. The Minister said that oil palm support price should be of the order of Rs 10,000 a tonne. Speaking to The Hans India, Aswaraopet MLA Tati Venkateswarlu said that the unit will have a captive power plant to generate 2MW power.

A palm oil refinery unit will soon be set up in Apparaopet at a cost of Rs 20 crore. The mechanical engineering costs of the unit will be Rs 52 crore and civil construction costs will be Rs 22 crore. the land acquired for the unit was 41 acres. Speaking to The Hans India, the plant manager, N Srikant Reddy, said that unit is being set up using the Malaysian know-how.

The capacity of the unit will be 30 tonnes with scope for doubling it in future. The construction activity is going on a feverish pitch and the unit would be useful to farmers.

Palmoil farmers’ association state committee president A Ramachandra Prasad expressed happiness at the long-cherished dream getting fulfilled. He said the unit took shape because of the initiative by Tummala Nageswara Rao. Committee member Ch Tata Rao said this is the biggest ever oil palm processing unit in the country coming up at Apparaopet.
