Hyderabad: The street vending policy announced by GHMC in October 2016 has gone for a toss. Amid huge fanfare on October 2 last, the corporation announced the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood & Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014. Officials claim that it is a difficult task to implement it.

Highly-placed sources in GHMC said that not even a single vending zone has been marked even after five months the policy coming into effect. The GHMC is contemplating to go in for partial vending zones instead of no vending zones.

However, officials claim that the corporation had conducted a comprehensive survey and identified as many as 24,093 street vendors.

The GHMC was facing severe problems in convincing them. Moreover, any such attempt by the GHMC was being met with resistance from local political leaders. A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the corporation during the last five months has surveyed and identified 53 places for free and partial vending zones across the city.

The corporation has distributed 14,770 identity cards to the vendors and formed 373 common interest groups (CIGs). He said that the each circle was to have three to five vending zones.

The official informed that the corporation has disbursed over Rs 19 lakh to 95 interest groups under self-employment loan scheme. Besides this, the corporation has also insured 5,200 vendors under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) (1,856 vendors), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) (2,988 vendors) and Atal Pension Yojna (APY) (356 vendors).

The GHMC official further said that another attempt would be made to create the vending zones by forming town vending committees (TVC) at the circle level. The TVC would make efforts to ensure accommodation of all the identified street vendors in the vending zones.
