Hyderabad: The state government has decided not to submit a detailed project report regarding Kaleswaram irrigation project to Godavari River Management Board (GRMB). The government refuted the argument of the Central Water Commission (CWC) that it was a new project. The government took the stand that the project was redesigned out of Pranahita- Chevella lift irrigation project and hence there is no need for submitting DPR afresh to GRMB.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who reviewed the situation, had decided to take up the issue with the Centre. He is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon. The Chief Minister is also likely to discuss the issue of delay in according clearances for the project. He will also reiterate the demand for granting of national status for the project.

It may be mentioned here that the CWC had asked the state government to submit DPR to GRMB and seek permissions. The government says that after redesigning the project, works have already been taken up for construction of Medigadda, Annaram- Sundilla, and Chanaka– Korata projects for the optimum utilisation of water under Kaleswaram project.

The government also succeeded in convincing the neighbouring Maharashtra state in the construction of inter-state –Tummidihatti project under Kaleswaram by reducing its height. The CWC, the government said, had already approved Pranahita- Chevella project in principle.

The government, officials say, is ready to furnish all project details only to the CWC to obtain hydrology, inter-state, cost appraisal and crop water requirement permissions. As per the guidelines, 18 directorates would have to give their nod for the project before the CWC accords final approval in consultation with the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in the commission.

Telangana government has planned to complete the project by 2018 and address irrigation and drinking water crisis in all north Telangana districts.
