Hyderabad: Police foiled the march to Assembly taken up by Telangana BJP protesting against the move of the government to hike the quota of Muslims from the present 4 percent to 12 percent in jobs and education.

Heavy police bandobust was made near the Assembly to prevent any untoward incident. Protestors in small groups from various directions tried to reach the Assembly but were stopped by the police. As the BJYM and BJP activists squatted on the roads raising slogans against the government, the police bodily lifted them and shifted them to different police stations.

BJP state president K Laxman, party floor leader G Kishan Reddy and others were among those who were detained. The two leaders said that since Thursday, the police had detained several party activists in the districts and prevented them from reaching Hyderabad.

Earlier, all five BJP members in the assembly were suspended from the House for two days for disrupting the proceedings on the issue of the Muslim quota. Wearing black scarves and raising slogans against the government, the BJP members stormed into the Well of the House and demanded that the proposal to increase the quota for Muslims be dropped.

Kishan Reddy said the government's move was "unconstitutional" as there was no provision for providing reservation on the basis of religion and his party would intensify its agitation on the issue.

As the members did not withdraw from the Well despite appeal by Speaker S Madhusudhanachary, Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao moved a resolution for the suspension of all the five members for two days. Leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy opposed the decision of the government to suspend the BJP members.

He said suspension should always be the last resort but here the minute a member protests he is suspended. He said that was not a proper method. He further said if the ‘Dharna Chowk’ was not closed, perhaps the BJP would not have decided to organise ‘chalo Assembly’. Protesting against the government’s decision to suspend the BJP members, the Congress party walked out of the House.
