UGADI BONANZA FOR WEAVERS

Hyderabad: As if announcing an Ugadi bonanza for the weavers of Sircilla, the state government has decided to place an order of 84 lakh sarees to be distributed among BPL women in Telangana on the occasion of Bathukamma festival.

According to BC welfare department officials, the new programme of the government would be taken up with an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore
and each saree would cost about Rs 183.

Bathukamma is a colourful floral festival of Telangana and is celebrated by womenfolk with exotic flowers of the region. The festival has over the years become a symbol of Telangana culture and identity. Bathukamma comes during the latter half of the monsoon.

The Bathukamma Saree Scheme (BSS) has a two-fold objective: One is to provide employment to weavers of Sircilla and secondly, to help women from BPL families to celebrate the festival with gaiety. The sarees would be ready for distribution by August, according to officials.

It may be mentioned here that the government had already placed bulk orders for fabric for school uniforms of various government schools across the state with these weavers.

In addition to this, the government has decided to upgrade about 50,000 powerlooms in the state and replace about 10,000 existing looms which have become obsolete.

The tentative cost of the upgradation would be about Rs 96,000 per each loom. This would be taken up using the Central government’s contribution of 50 per cent. As a backup for repairs a Common Facility Centre (CFC) would be established with an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.
